10 Conversation Starters That Don’t Suck


Whether it’s a work holiday party, a social event, a networking event or a gender reveal party, there will come a time where you will have to do “the small talk”.

If you have to do it, why not master it so you can minimize that awkward silence, or being in that “I don’t know what to say mode”

One way to master the small talk and make it more engaging and less of a bore is to ask open-ended questions that offer people an opportunity to give a longer answer or tell a personal story, rather than give plain, one-word answers:

Below are a handful conversation starters for any event…. and follow up questions (because I know people get stuck with – what do ask next?)

Here are some conversation starters AND follow up questions.

Setting: Work holiday parties or events.

Do you like work holiday parties [or name the work event] or do you go because you think you should?

What’s the worst holiday party [or name the work event] you’ve ever been to? What made it so bad?

Do you do any outside sports or activities in the winter time? Which ones?

Do you celebrate [name the holiday]? What’s the biggest thing you do to celebrate?


Setting: Any and all events or gatherings.

Do you vacation often? What’s the best vacation you’ve been on? What made it the best?

Did you grow up in [name of local city/town]? What’s do you miss most about where you grew up?

Have you traveled to any different countries? Which ones? What’s the furthest country you’ve been to? What’s the longest plane ride you’ve been on?

If you could be anywhere in the world right now doing your favourite thing, where would you be and what would you be doing?

Could I ask you a question, are you here because you want to be or because you have to be? How did you get invited, do you know the host?

Overall, the person asking the questions leads the conversation, even though you may not be the one doing most of the talking.

Continue to ask open ended questions and allow others to talk about them selves, their opinions and their experiences. When you do that, it allows you to; one simply talk less, and, two learn some interesting tid-bits about the other people in the room. I promise you at times what you discover can truly add to the entire experience of the entire event.
